THE SIXTH MAN CHRONICLES:
MARVIN WILLIAMS
Marvin Williams of the Atlanta Hawks is doing an outstanding job so far this season. Coming off the bench behind Luol Deng, Williams is averaging 12.9 points and 6 rebounds in just 32.5 minutes of play. Last year Williams was a starter for the Hawks but had to make some adjustments after the organization traded for British stud Luol Deng, and it was decided that he would start this year over Williams.
The former UNC star has been coping well with the recent line-up change. "Well man, it don't matter to me if I'm gonna start or come off the bench. Coach knows what he's doing and I trust him. I'm gonna do everything I can to help my team win, even if it means I ain't gon' be on the floor in the beginning of the game. Everything I can do to help us win, is what I'm gonna try to do."
Marvin tried, and oh he has succeeded. Williams play this year is reflected specifically on a 36 point outburst he had against the Miami Heat. Marvin went 14 for 22 from the field, as well as 3 for 6 from long distance. He was a perfect 5 for 5 from the charity stripe, and nearly had a double-double with 9 rebounds. He also showed great teamwork and leadership, proven by his six dimes on the night.
Williams has also proven to be a consistent bench presence, having 10 games where he had score 15+ points. If Marvin Williams keeps up this level of play, he will surely have a spot on the top 10 ballot for the Sixth Man of the Year Award.
